Above-Ground Vs. Underground Septic Tanks: Choosing What’s Best For Your Idaho Property

Above-Ground vs. Underground Septic Tanks: Choosing What's Best for Your Idaho Property

Septic systems are often unsung heroes of residential and commercial sanitation, particularly in areas without proper access to municipal sewer systems. They preserve public health, protect the environment, and enable properties to function independently.

In Idaho communities such as Pocatello, Rexburg, Twin Falls, Idaho Falls, Montpelier, Rigby, and surrounding areas, selecting the best septic system — whether above-ground or underground — can significantly impact system performance.

This guide will help homeowners and business owners understand the differences between these solutions, informed by Idaho-specific conditions so that you can make the right choice for your property.

What Is an Above-Ground Septic System?

Definition & Purpose

An above-ground septic system employs tanks that are located entirely or partially above the soil surface. These alternatives are ideal when underground septic tank installation is impractical, especially due to rocky terrain, high water tables, or poorly draining soils.

Types

  • Residential Above-Ground Tanks: Frequently used in remote homes or cottages in Eastern Idaho when digging is difficult.
  • RV Holding Tanks: Temporary above-ground tanks for camping or recreational setups.
  • Commercial Above-Ground Systems: A portable, modular option suited for construction sites or seasonal businesses where underground planting isn’t possible.

Why Go Above Ground?

According to the top septic service experts in Montpelier, ID, who specialize in the best septic system for Idaho homes, there are a few reasons why:

  • Poor soils or rocky substrata make trench excavation costly.
  • High-water-table areas are prone to flooding and bad weather conditions (e.g., near the Snake River in Twin Falls).
  • Temporary usage scenarios, such as remote events or seasonal shops.

Core Components

  • Above-ground tank (fiberglass/plastic).
  • Inlet/outlet piping with pump system.
  • Drainfield or secondary leach field (sometimes elevated).
  • Venting and access cover for maintenance.

What Is an Underground Septic System?

Definition & Function

An underground septic system keeps everything out of sight by burying the tank below the surface. Wastewater from the home flows into this tank, where heavier solids settle at the bottom. Over time, these solids are pumped out by professionals, while the remaining liquid is filtered through a nearby drain field and safely absorbed into the soil.

Common Setups

  • Residential underground septic systems serving single-family homes.
  • Rural septic setups on larger acreage outside city limits.
  • Commercial or multi-unit systems scaled to serve multiple bathrooms.

Installation Overview

  • Excavation (typically 6–8 ft deep).
  • Placement of tank (concrete, plastic, or fiberglass).
  • Connection to premises plumbing.
  • Trenching and gravel bed installation for the leach field.
  • Backfilling and site stabilization, often with turf or landscaped covers.

Advantages

Leading septic service contractors in Idaho Falls reveal that there are some perks to underground septic tank installation, including:

  • Tucked below ground, the system remains completely out of sight, maintaining a clean and uncluttered appearance in your yard.
  • A longer lifespan, as most underground tanks typically last 30–40 years.
  • Environmental protection via natural soil filtration.

Side‑by‑Side Comparison

Feature Above‑Ground Systems Underground Systems
Installation Time Faster (days); minimal digging Longer (2–4 weeks); excavation and soil work needed
Cost Lower tank cost; higher transport/pump costs Higher due to excavation, labor, and soil prep
Maintenance Easier access for pumping and inspection Requires lifting risers or digging for access
Aesthetics Visible tank may clash with landscaping Fully buried and visually seamless
Suitability Ideal for rocky, above-water, or temporary use Best for permanent homes with good soil drainage

Which System Is Right for You?

1. Property Use

  • Short-term or mobile use: Above-ground septic tank system (e.g., RV camping, construction sites).
  • Permanent home or business: Underground septic tank for longevity and appearance.

2. Soil & Drainage

  • Shallow bedrock or clay soils: Above-ground avoids excessive excavation.
  • Permeable soils (such as sand and loam): Underground systems thrive in such soil conditions.

3. Water Table & Flood Risk

  • High-water-table areas (e.g., near the Snake River in Twin Falls): Elevated above-ground tanks remain dry.
  • Dry uplands like Montpelier: Underground septic tank systems work fine here.

4. Time & Cost Considerations

  • Quick installation with budget constraints: It’s best to opt for above-ground septic service.
  • Long-term investment with landscaping goals: Choose underground septic tank installation.

5. Maintenance & Accessibility

  • Frequent inspections and pumping are necessary: Even the most credible septic service experts in Pocatello believe that above-ground systems simplify routine maintenance services in both commercial and residential setups.
  • Low-vis maintenance required: Naturally, underground septic tanks work quietly in the background.

6. Visual Preferences

  • Want tank out of sight: Underground septic system
  • Tank aesthetics are less critical: Above-ground is fine.

7. Climate Considerations

  • Cold winters (e.g., Idaho Falls): Underground septic tanks offer more stable temperatures.
  • Frequent freeze-thaw zones: Above-ground areas may require insulation or heating to prevent damage.

8. Codes & Regulations

  • Idaho counties have varying septic regulations, and advanced systems often require permits.
  • According to the top septic service specialists in Rexburg, all systems need to comply with EPA and Idaho Department of Environmental Quality standards. Always consult local authorities before choosing.

9. Environmental Impact

  • Both systems require regular pumping, especially by a credible firm like MVP Rentals, to reduce reverse osmosis water waste and prevent seepage. Additionally, remember that proper placement helps prevent groundwater contamination.

10. Scalability

  • Upgrades, expansions, or repurposing land are easier with above-ground modular units.

Regular Septic Service: Key to Longevity

Even with the right system, maintenance is paramount. MVP Rentals provides full septic service support throughout Idaho, including Pocatello, Rexburg, Twin Falls, and surrounding areas.

  • Regular pumping every 1 to 3 years, depending on household size and usage, can help prevent system overload and keep your septic system running perfectly for years to come.
  • Protects septic fields and groundwater.

Watch for These Warning Signs

  • Slow drains or backups.
  • Strange odors near the tank or drain field.
  • Unusual lush vegetation above the tank.
  • Gurgling sounds when flushing or using drains.

Wrap-Up: Which Tank Makes Sense for You?

Choosing between above-ground and underground septic systems hinges on your property, priorities, and Idaho’s geology.

  • Above-ground bowls are perfect when ease of installation, cost, soil conditions, or temporary use are top priorities.
  • Underground tanks excel in beauty, quietness, and long-term durability, making them ideal for both residential and commercial applications.

But choosing the tank is just the beginning. Regular servicing is non-negotiable. Our team at MVP Rentals specializes in pumping, inspection, and emergency repair across Southern and Eastern Idaho. Recently I had an event scheduled at my house. I knew I needed a couple of porta potty's. Since this was for an event that required people to look their best, I wanted something more than a pit toilet. MVP was amazing. The initial contact along with delivery, set up, and pick up went amazing. The buildings were clean, and well stocked, AND they had running water, which the guests appreciated. I HIGHLY recommend MVP for any portable toilets you may need, whether it is in the field or at a wedding.

For full disclosure, I was offered a discount to leave a Google review regarding the June 4-11, 2024, rental, but of course this review is my sincere comments and observations of renting from MVP Rentals. This is the second time I’ve rented a porta potty from them. The first rental was in March 2021. This review is regarding the most recent rental in June 2024.This time I also got a handwash station since there’d be an outdoor event in summer, with food. You want people to be able to wash their hands after using the potty lol!The pros:1) Follow-up was excellent, as I had requested a quote for a potty in March or April I think, and they made notes to call me in May when a June family event got closer and they did!And when there was an issue (or seemed to be) their follow-up was excellent again!!!2) Their customer service was prompt, responsive and always friendly!!! When I left a message they replied or returned quickly and professionally. There were a couple glitches at the beginning when the potty was delivered (times 2 instead of 1), but not with the handwash station I’d requested, and their great employee went back and brought back the handwash station ASAP.Unfortunately I didn’t realize he’d dropped off the handwash station and I didn’t realize until after he’d left that there was other minor concerns, but some was user error on my part!I called and communicated my concerns that day in a voicemail (late afternoon) when I realized them, and they QUICKLY responded and were patient and kind about the user issue, and so pleasant to express a legit concern to!I’ve definitely dealt with companies that act like they think you’re the problem for bringing a concern or possible quality issue to their attention; I definitely got a very pleasant and prompt interaction and solutions from MVP in response to my voicemail, and that was such a relief. They promptly sent their guy back out early the next morning, who rectified my concerns with supplies or condition, and he also answered my questions on how the wash station worked, because I was a bit concerned about possibly running out of water or soap sometime during the week and wanted to know how to fill the water or empty the grey water (that’s an easy thing I wanted to be able to do myself if needed- no need for someone to drive over and do something I could do already in the short time it would take to call them), but that didn’t happen! The quantity of everything was enough to last the whole week.I had received a quote from one of their competitors, whose price was a few dollars lower without an incentive for leaving a Google review specifically, but I’d rented from MVP before and they already (or still) had the address on file and such, so I preferred sticking with the same company. The first time I rented from MVP, I requested only 1 potty in March 2021 when we had lots of family visiting a home with 1 bathroom! The price back then was a bit more than 1/4 of what the undiscounted price is now, but now I also rented a handwash station. So I estimate that it’s about double what it was before, but it’s been 3 years and a lot has changed in the whole economy in 3 years, especially the cost of gasoline, which in turn makes the costs of so many other services rise, besides supply and demand factoring into the equation. So anyway, it wasn’t a perfect experience, part of why I leave 4 stars, but their responsive and friendly attitudes made for a very good customer service experience, which means everything!and I definitely am happy with the whole experience, besides not being sure I’ll be able to afford such a service in the future since all such companies are that price or higher.Such is life I guess. First world problems, and this world is not my home; I’m just passing through! I’m glad MVP rentals was available this time though, and the porta potty was almost literally a lifesaver on a few occasions! Thanks again!
