Common Errors Homeowners Make with Their Septic Systems

Essential-Spring-Maintenance-Tips-for-Your-Septic-System

For every homeowner, maintaining a working septic system is essential, yet it’s a duty that’s frequently disregarded until issues appear. Your septic system is essential to ensure that household waste is treated and disposed of correctly. However, many homeowners unintentionally commit errors that can result in expensive septic system repairs, environmental harm, and annoyance. We’ll examine the typical septic system errors made by homeowners in this extensive tutorial, providing advice on how to steer clear of them and preserve the health and functionality of your system.

Signs of Water Heater Leaks

Before delving into the common septic system errors homeowners make, it’s critical to identify potential septic system problems. Leaks in water heaters are a major sign of issues. Water heater leaks may appear unrelated to your septic system, but they might indicate plumbing problems that could compromise your wastewater management system.

1. Infrequent Pumping

The most frequent error homeowners make is not routinely pumping their septic tanks. Solid waste builds up in the tank over time, which can cause backups, jams, and even system failure. Depending on the size of your home and the amount of water used, pumping your septic tank should be done every three to five years. Avoid expensive repairs and ensure your system runs well by scheduling routine septic tank pumping.

2. Flushing Improper Items

Many homeowners need to learn what can and cannot be poured down the drain or flushed down the toilet. Items like chemicals, paper towels, wipes, sanitary products, and grease can cause severe damage to your septic system when flushed. These things have the potential to obstruct drain fields, upset the delicate bacterial balance in your tank, and clog pipes.

3. Overloading the System

Overusing water and overloading the septic system is another common error. Your system may be strained by routines like running the dishwasher frequently, taking long showers, and doing many loads of laundry in one day. Overflowing water can overflow the tank, blocking the normal breakdown of waste and leading to backups. Spread your water use over the week and consider installing water-saving devices to prevent system overload.

4. Ignoring Warning Signs

Disaster is guaranteed if septic system warning indicators are disregarded. You should never disregard warning signs in your yard, such as gurgling pipes, slow drains, bad odors, and wet spots. These signs point to deeper problems in your system that must be corrected immediately. Ignoring warning indicators can result in expensive repairs and significant damage. If you see any of these symptoms, contact a qualified septic service company right away so they can diagnose and fix the issue.

5. Neglecting Inspections

Regular septic inspections are necessary to spot possible issues before they get worse. Regretfully, many homeowners need to remember to plan regular septic system checks. In the long run, professional septic tank inspections can save you time and money by detecting leaks, cracks, tree root invasion, and drainage issues early on. Schedule biannual checks with a licensed septic service company to keep your septic system in the best possible condition.

6. Parking or Building Over the System

Building structures or parking cars on your septic system poses a considerable danger of injury. Compacting soil and crushing pipes, tanks, or drain fields with the weight of cars or structures can lead to costly repairs. Remember where your septic system is, and avoid parking or constructing over it. Contact a septic professional if you need help locating and designating the area.

7. Using Harsh Chemicals

Homeowners often use harsh chemicals to cover up smells or unclog drains, but they can harm your septic system. Chemical drain cleaners can destroy your tank’s beneficial microorganisms, preventing waste from breaking down naturally. Harsh chemicals can also harm the tank and drain field in addition to corroding pipes. For safe septic system maintenance solutions, talk to a professional or use natural, septic-friendly alternatives to chemicals.

8. Landscaping Mistakes

Your septic system’s surrounding landscaping can lead to several issues. If invasive root systems are positioned too close to a tank or drain field, tank and pipe damage may result. Pipes can get clogged and leaky due to roots getting inside of them. Moreover, when landscaping, compacting the soil with heavy equipment could damage and reduce the efficiency of the drainage system. Exercise caution and seek advice from a licensed landscaper with septic system installation experience when designing a landscape surrounding your septic system.

9. Improper Repairs

Repairing your septic system yourself can cause more harm than benefit. DIY fixes without the right tools and skills can worsen or generate new problems. Delegating septic system repairs and maintenance to skilled experts with the expertise and experience required to ensure a project is completed appropriately and safely is critical. Trying to save money by doing your repairs may cost you more in the long run.

Recently I had an event scheduled at my house. I knew I needed a couple of porta potty's. Since this was for an event that required people to look their best, I wanted something more than a pit toilet. MVP was amazing. The initial contact along with delivery, set up, and pick up went amazing. The buildings were clean, and well stocked, AND they had running water, which the guests appreciated. I HIGHLY recommend MVP for any portable toilets you may need, whether it is in the field or at a wedding.

For full disclosure, I was offered a discount to leave a Google review regarding the June 4-11, 2024, rental, but of course this review is my sincere comments and observations of renting from MVP Rentals. This is the second time I’ve rented a porta potty from them. The first rental was in March 2021. This review is regarding the most recent rental in June 2024.This time I also got a handwash station since there’d be an outdoor event in summer, with food. You want people to be able to wash their hands after using the potty lol!The pros:1) Follow-up was excellent, as I had requested a quote for a potty in March or April I think, and they made notes to call me in May when a June family event got closer and they did!And when there was an issue (or seemed to be) their follow-up was excellent again!!!2) Their customer service was prompt, responsive and always friendly!!! When I left a message they replied or returned quickly and professionally. There were a couple glitches at the beginning when the potty was delivered (times 2 instead of 1), but not with the handwash station I’d requested, and their great employee went back and brought back the handwash station ASAP.Unfortunately I didn’t realize he’d dropped off the handwash station and I didn’t realize until after he’d left that there was other minor concerns, but some was user error on my part!I called and communicated my concerns that day in a voicemail (late afternoon) when I realized them, and they QUICKLY responded and were patient and kind about the user issue, and so pleasant to express a legit concern to!I’ve definitely dealt with companies that act like they think you’re the problem for bringing a concern or possible quality issue to their attention; I definitely got a very pleasant and prompt interaction and solutions from MVP in response to my voicemail, and that was such a relief. They promptly sent their guy back out early the next morning, who rectified my concerns with supplies or condition, and he also answered my questions on how the wash station worked, because I was a bit concerned about possibly running out of water or soap sometime during the week and wanted to know how to fill the water or empty the grey water (that’s an easy thing I wanted to be able to do myself if needed- no need for someone to drive over and do something I could do already in the short time it would take to call them), but that didn’t happen! The quantity of everything was enough to last the whole week.I had received a quote from one of their competitors, whose price was a few dollars lower without an incentive for leaving a Google review specifically, but I’d rented from MVP before and they already (or still) had the address on file and such, so I preferred sticking with the same company. The first time I rented from MVP, I requested only 1 potty in March 2021 when we had lots of family visiting a home with 1 bathroom! The price back then was a bit more than 1/4 of what the undiscounted price is now, but now I also rented a handwash station. So I estimate that it’s about double what it was before, but it’s been 3 years and a lot has changed in the whole economy in 3 years, especially the cost of gasoline, which in turn makes the costs of so many other services rise, besides supply and demand factoring into the equation. So anyway, it wasn’t a perfect experience, part of why I leave 4 stars, but their responsive and friendly attitudes made for a very good customer service experience, which means everything!and I definitely am happy with the whole experience, besides not being sure I’ll be able to afford such a service in the future since all such companies are that price or higher.Such is life I guess. First world problems, and this world is not my home; I’m just passing through! I’m glad MVP rentals was available this time though, and the porta potty was almost literally a lifesaver on a few occasions! Thanks again!

We have needed the portable toilets moved in the past to sightly different areas then what they were placed. They have always been more than happy to make sure that we were accommodated and they were placed where we needed them. They keep the units super clean and stocked. They always go above and beyond.
