What To Do When Your Septic System Backs Up: Signs, Causes & Emergency Solutions

What to Do When Your Septic System Backs Up: Signs, Causes & Emergency Solutions

Few things are more unsettling than discovering a sewage backup from a septic tank at home or on-site. Unexpectedly dealing with foul smells from drains, gurgling pipes, clogged drain field, or pooling water in the yard can disrupt daily life and pose serious hygiene risks. As a trusted Eastern Idaho provider, including septic service in Pocatello, Twin Falls, Idaho Falls, Rexburg, Montpelier, Rigby, and surrounding locations, our team at MVP Rentals understands the vital importance of a clean, functioning septic system.

In this guide, you’ll learn how to identify a septic system backup, what to do if the septic tank backs up, uncover its root causes, and take immediate steps to resolve the issue while seamlessly integrating MVP Rentals’ expert support and services.

Common Signs Your Septic Tank Is Backing Up

According to the leading septic system inspection service experts in Pocatello, recognizing early warning signals can save you from costly repairs. Watch for these unmistakable signs:

Symptom What It Means
Slow drains in house Sinks, showers, or tubs emptying slowly signal a potential blockage downstream.
Toilet bubbling septic system Air bubbles in the toilet indicate trapped air escaping from a clogged system.
Foul smell from drains Unpleasant odors are a hallmark of sewage trapped in the tank or plumbing.
Gurgling pipes septic tank Gurgling sounds suggest pressure buildup due to blockage.
Pooling water in yard Water gathering near drain field often indicates a septictank overflowing.
Sewage smell in bathroom Indoor odors mean sewage vapors are escaping into your home.

Notice one or more of these? Likely, you’re experiencing a septic system backup scenario.

What Causes Septic Tank Backup?

Even the leading septic tank inspection service contractors in Montpelier, ID, believe that understanding the root causes helps prevent recurrence:

  1. The septic tank is full and backing up: Neglecting routine pumping can lead to the accumulation of solids, overwhelming the system and eventually resulting in septic system failure.
  2. Clogged drain field: Non-decomposable materials or grease block the absorption area.
  3. Excessive water flow: High usage or leaks overload the tank.
  4. Tree root intrusion: Roots can invade and damage pipes and tank walls.
  5. Ground saturation: Heavy rains near the drain field reduce soil absorption capacity.
  6. Septic system failure: According to the top septic tank system service specialists in Rexburg, age-related wear, corrosion, or misaligned components can also cause system breakdowns.

If you’re experiencing either of these issues, please don’t hesitate to contact our experts at (208) 244-7843.

What to Do If Your Septic Tank Backs Up?

When disaster strikes, here’s a step-by-step emergency protocol:

  • Shut off the water immediately to reduce strain.
  • Avoid using plumbing fixtures, such as toilets, showers, and sinks.
  • Contain spills promptly to prevent mess and contamination.
  • Clear odors and leaks using fans, masks, or protective gear.

Then, depending on severity, if you face:

  1. Minor clog in household plumbing? Run hot water or use septic-safe enzyme treatments.
  2. Overflow or backed-up septic tank? This is a job for professionals—cue MVP Rentals’ emergency septic service.

How to Know If Your Septic Tank Is Full or Failing

Watch for these indicators that your tank is nearing capacity or has failed:

  • Your septic tank is full and backing up, with frequent backups occurring even after pumping has been done.
  • If you notice water or sewage pooling around the tank lids, it likely means the ground is too saturated for proper drainage.
  • Grass that looks unusually green or thick over the drain field could indicate that too much wastewater is rising to the surface.
  • Cracks, sunken soil, or tree roots near the system are signs of damage that need immediate attention.
  • If an inspection reveals heavy sludge or scum buildup, it’s a clear sign the tank hasn’t been maintained properly.

If you’re unsure about a backed-up septic system, schedule a septic tank inspection with MVP Rentals. We can accurately diagnose the issue and provide guidance on the next steps to take.

How to Prevent Future Septic Backups

Even the most popular septic service contractors in Rigby, ID, believe that smart, proactive habits can save you time and money:

  • Routine pumping schedule: Generally, every 1–3 years, our crew at MVP Rentals handles tanks with capacities ranging from 1,000 to 1,000 gallons.
  • Limit what goes in: No wipes, grease, or harsh chemicals that harm system function.
  • Conserve water: Fix leaks, spread out laundry loads, and use high-efficiency appliances.
  • Protect your drain field: Avoid planting trees nearby and refrain from parking vehicles on them.
  • Annual inspections: Early spot cleaning can help prevent problems. Furthermore, our septic tank inspection service checks all components.
  • Weather-smart maintenance: Before heavy rain seasons, clear gutters and ensure surface drainage keeps a distance from the field.

Recently I had an event scheduled at my house. I knew I needed a couple of porta potty's. Since this was for an event that required people to look their best, I wanted something more than a pit toilet. MVP was amazing. The initial contact along with delivery, set up, and pick up went amazing. The buildings were clean, and well stocked, AND they had running water, which the guests appreciated. I HIGHLY recommend MVP for any portable toilets you may need, whether it is in the field or at a wedding.

For full disclosure, I was offered a discount to leave a Google review regarding the June 4-11, 2024, rental, but of course this review is my sincere comments and observations of renting from MVP Rentals. This is the second time I’ve rented a porta potty from them. The first rental was in March 2021. This review is regarding the most recent rental in June 2024.This time I also got a handwash station since there’d be an outdoor event in summer, with food. You want people to be able to wash their hands after using the potty lol!The pros:1) Follow-up was excellent, as I had requested a quote for a potty in March or April I think, and they made notes to call me in May when a June family event got closer and they did!And when there was an issue (or seemed to be) their follow-up was excellent again!!!2) Their customer service was prompt, responsive and always friendly!!! When I left a message they replied or returned quickly and professionally. There were a couple glitches at the beginning when the potty was delivered (times 2 instead of 1), but not with the handwash station I’d requested, and their great employee went back and brought back the handwash station ASAP.Unfortunately I didn’t realize he’d dropped off the handwash station and I didn’t realize until after he’d left that there was other minor concerns, but some was user error on my part!I called and communicated my concerns that day in a voicemail (late afternoon) when I realized them, and they QUICKLY responded and were patient and kind about the user issue, and so pleasant to express a legit concern to!I’ve definitely dealt with companies that act like they think you’re the problem for bringing a concern or possible quality issue to their attention; I definitely got a very pleasant and prompt interaction and solutions from MVP in response to my voicemail, and that was such a relief. They promptly sent their guy back out early the next morning, who rectified my concerns with supplies or condition, and he also answered my questions on how the wash station worked, because I was a bit concerned about possibly running out of water or soap sometime during the week and wanted to know how to fill the water or empty the grey water (that’s an easy thing I wanted to be able to do myself if needed- no need for someone to drive over and do something I could do already in the short time it would take to call them), but that didn’t happen! The quantity of everything was enough to last the whole week.I had received a quote from one of their competitors, whose price was a few dollars lower without an incentive for leaving a Google review specifically, but I’d rented from MVP before and they already (or still) had the address on file and such, so I preferred sticking with the same company. The first time I rented from MVP, I requested only 1 potty in March 2021 when we had lots of family visiting a home with 1 bathroom! The price back then was a bit more than 1/4 of what the undiscounted price is now, but now I also rented a handwash station. So I estimate that it’s about double what it was before, but it’s been 3 years and a lot has changed in the whole economy in 3 years, especially the cost of gasoline, which in turn makes the costs of so many other services rise, besides supply and demand factoring into the equation. So anyway, it wasn’t a perfect experience, part of why I leave 4 stars, but their responsive and friendly attitudes made for a very good customer service experience, which means everything!and I definitely am happy with the whole experience, besides not being sure I’ll be able to afford such a service in the future since all such companies are that price or higher.Such is life I guess. First world problems, and this world is not my home; I’m just passing through! I’m glad MVP rentals was available this time though, and the porta potty was almost literally a lifesaver on a few occasions! Thanks again!
