Smell From The Septic System? 7 Proven Steps To Stop It Permanently

Smell from Septic System 7 Proven Steps to Stop It Permanently

A foul septic tank odor is more than just a minor inconvenience, as it can be extremely invasive, unpleasant, and a persistent reminder that something might be seriously wrong beneath the surface of your home. That sulfuric, rotten-egg smell isn’t just embarrassing when guests arrive; it’s a proper health hazard. It can also indicate deeper septic system malfunctions and, in some cases, even pose health hazards.

So, why does your house or yard smell like a sewage plant? And more importantly, what can you do to fix it?

This blog dives deep into the science and strategy behind eliminating septic tank smell in house and yard areas. We’ll walk you through seven proven steps to permanently eliminate septic tank smells, explain the potential risks of ignoring the issue, and show you how Idaho homeowners can rely on septic service professionals in Rigby, Pocatello, Rexburg, Twin Falls, Montpelier, ID, and surrounding areas, like the trusted team at MVP Rentals, to keep their systems running smoothly and efficiently.

What’s Causing That Awful Septic Tank Smell?

Understanding the root causes of odor from the septic tank can help you prevent costly repairs and long-term damage. Here are the most common culprits:

  • Blocked or damaged vent pipes: When vent pipes clog or break, sewer gases have nowhere to go, except inside your home.
  • Overdue septic tank pumping: If your tank hasn’t been pumped in years, it’s likely overflowing and leaking gases.
  • Leach field failure: Top septic service specialists in Twin Falls reveal that a saturated drain field can cause gases and effluent to rise to the surface, potentially contaminating the surrounding area.
  • Cracks in the tank or risers: These allow gases to seep directly into your yard or home.
  • Improper use of harsh household cleaners: According to the leading septic service contractors in Rexburg, chemical-heavy products kill essential bacteria in the tank, disrupting the natural digestion process.
  • Bacterial imbalance or anaerobic digestion issues: When the microbial community in your tank is out of sync, smells escalate.

These issues typically do not resolve themselves on their own. If you’ve been searching “why does my septic tank smell” or “how to stop septic tank smell,” you’re not alone, and help is closer than you think.

Is the Septic Smell in My House Dangerous?

In short, yes—it can be. According to the leading septic service experts in Montepelier, ID, while a fleeting smell might not be cause for panic, prolonged exposure to septic tank gases, such as methane or hydrogen sulfide, is not safe.

Potential Health Risks:

  • Hydrogen Sulfide: Can cause headaches, nausea, eye irritation, and dizziness.
  • Methane: Highly flammable and displaces oxygen in enclosed spaces.
  • Ammonia: Can irritate the lungs and eyes with consistent exposure.

Beyond physical symptoms, a septic system smell in the house can often signal deeper structural problems with your tank or system that, if left unresolved, could require a full replacement. Trust us, that’s not a bill you want to see.

7 Proven Steps to Stop Septic Tank Smell Permanently

It’s time to get practical. Below are seven expert-recommended steps that homeowners across Idaho can take to eliminate septic system odor in the house for good.

1. Inspect for Clogs in Vent Pipes

Blocked vent pipes = trapped sewer gas.

According to the leading septic service specialists in Idaho Falls, over time, your system’s plumbing vents can become clogged with leaves, animal nests, or debris. This prevents gases from escaping properly, causing them to be pushed back into your home.

What to do:

  1. Have a licensed professional inspect and clear your vent stack.
  2. Install a mesh screen to keep pests out.

MVP Rentals routinely checks for septic tank vent pipe issues during inspections in Idaho Falls, Pocatello, and surrounding areas.

2. Pump the Septic Tank Regularly

This isn’t just a suggestion—it’s non-negotiable. Overfilled tanks are the top cause of bad smell from drain lines and yards.

General Pumping Guidelines:

Household Size Pump Every…
1–2 people 4–5 years
3–4 people 3–4 years
5+ people 2–3 years

Ignoring this step invites backup, flooding, and of course, septic tank stink. Our crew at MVP Rentals offers septic pumping and cleaning services throughout southeast Idaho, including Twin Falls, Rigby, Rexburg, and surrounding areas.

3. Check for Leach Field Problems

When your drain field (or leach field) fails, wastewater has nowhere to go, and gases can rise through the soil instead.

Watch for:

  1. Standing, pooling water above the drain field.
  2. Grass growing taller and greener over one area.
  3. Sewage smells near the soil.

These are classic septic backup warning signs. Our team at MVP Rentals conducts thorough septic inspections that can help identify leach field problems before they escalate.

4. Seal All Cracks and Tank Openings

Gas doesn’t need a big hole to leak out. Even a cracked lid or broken seal can lead to a sewer gas smell in the house or yard.

Fixes include:

  1. Resealing or replacing cracked lids.
  2. Repairing worn gaskets.
  3. Checking risers and cleanouts for tight seals.

If you’re unsure what to look for, MVP Rentals can help evaluate your system on-site and make expert recommendations.

5. Install an Activated Carbon Vent Filter

According to the top septic service contractors in Twin Falls, persistent odors can often point to septic tank vent pipe issues. If your vent pipes are clear but the smell lingers, consider installing a carbon filter at the exit point.

Why it works:

  1. Activated carbon neutralizes odor-causing gases.
  2. Filters are affordable, easy to replace, and highly effective.
  3. Especially helpful for homes with vents located near windows.

6. Use Septic-Safe Cleaning Products

Harsh chemicals don’t just clean your counters—they kill the beneficial bacteria in your septic tank.

Avoid:

  1. Bleach-heavy products
  2. Ammonia-based cleaners
  3. Antibacterial agents

Opt for:

  1. Biodegradable, non-toxic cleaners
  2. Plant-based dish soap and laundry detergent
  3. Products marked “safe for septic systems”

This helps restore microbial balance and prevents smells caused by sludge buildup and fermentation.

7. Call a Professional Septic Service Provider

Even the most credible septic service professionals in Rigby believe that sometimes, the best step is to step aside and let the experts handle it.

What a technician will do:

  1. Inspect and clean your system
  2. Identify venting issues or structural faults
  3. Offer a long-term maintenance strategy

MVP Rentals offers trusted and efficient septic services in Montpelier, Pocatello, Rexburg, Idaho Falls, and surrounding areas. Our technicians have the experience and equipment to deal with even the most stubborn septic tank odor issues.

Recently I had an event scheduled at my house. I knew I needed a couple of porta potty's. Since this was for an event that required people to look their best, I wanted something more than a pit toilet. MVP was amazing. The initial contact along with delivery, set up, and pick up went amazing. The buildings were clean, and well stocked, AND they had running water, which the guests appreciated. I HIGHLY recommend MVP for any portable toilets you may need, whether it is in the field or at a wedding.

For full disclosure, I was offered a discount to leave a Google review regarding the June 4-11, 2024, rental, but of course this review is my sincere comments and observations of renting from MVP Rentals. This is the second time I’ve rented a porta potty from them. The first rental was in March 2021. This review is regarding the most recent rental in June 2024.This time I also got a handwash station since there’d be an outdoor event in summer, with food. You want people to be able to wash their hands after using the potty lol!The pros:1) Follow-up was excellent, as I had requested a quote for a potty in March or April I think, and they made notes to call me in May when a June family event got closer and they did!And when there was an issue (or seemed to be) their follow-up was excellent again!!!2) Their customer service was prompt, responsive and always friendly!!! When I left a message they replied or returned quickly and professionally. There were a couple glitches at the beginning when the potty was delivered (times 2 instead of 1), but not with the handwash station I’d requested, and their great employee went back and brought back the handwash station ASAP.Unfortunately I didn’t realize he’d dropped off the handwash station and I didn’t realize until after he’d left that there was other minor concerns, but some was user error on my part!I called and communicated my concerns that day in a voicemail (late afternoon) when I realized them, and they QUICKLY responded and were patient and kind about the user issue, and so pleasant to express a legit concern to!I’ve definitely dealt with companies that act like they think you’re the problem for bringing a concern or possible quality issue to their attention; I definitely got a very pleasant and prompt interaction and solutions from MVP in response to my voicemail, and that was such a relief. They promptly sent their guy back out early the next morning, who rectified my concerns with supplies or condition, and he also answered my questions on how the wash station worked, because I was a bit concerned about possibly running out of water or soap sometime during the week and wanted to know how to fill the water or empty the grey water (that’s an easy thing I wanted to be able to do myself if needed- no need for someone to drive over and do something I could do already in the short time it would take to call them), but that didn’t happen! The quantity of everything was enough to last the whole week.I had received a quote from one of their competitors, whose price was a few dollars lower without an incentive for leaving a Google review specifically, but I’d rented from MVP before and they already (or still) had the address on file and such, so I preferred sticking with the same company. The first time I rented from MVP, I requested only 1 potty in March 2021 when we had lots of family visiting a home with 1 bathroom! The price back then was a bit more than 1/4 of what the undiscounted price is now, but now I also rented a handwash station. So I estimate that it’s about double what it was before, but it’s been 3 years and a lot has changed in the whole economy in 3 years, especially the cost of gasoline, which in turn makes the costs of so many other services rise, besides supply and demand factoring into the equation. So anyway, it wasn’t a perfect experience, part of why I leave 4 stars, but their responsive and friendly attitudes made for a very good customer service experience, which means everything!and I definitely am happy with the whole experience, besides not being sure I’ll be able to afford such a service in the future since all such companies are that price or higher.Such is life I guess. First world problems, and this world is not my home; I’m just passing through! I’m glad MVP rentals was available this time though, and the porta potty was almost literally a lifesaver on a few occasions! Thanks again!
