How to Prevent Septic System Overload During Events

The general holding of a large event entails careful preparation, and something that may go unnoticed is having a well-functioning septic system in Rexburg, Idaho Falls, Pocatello, Twin Falls, and Rigby. When people overfill a septic system at an event, it causes backups, gross smells, and expensive problems. As this guide points out, preparation, water management, and post-event planning can prevent septic system overload and uncomfortable situations for your guests.
This blog provides crucial tips for avoiding emergency septic system overload at events while showing how MVP Rentals can help maintain your septic system with excellent services.

Pre-Event Preparation

Effective pre-event preparation is the foundation for ensuring that the septic system can handle the increased load of an event. Planning is key for hosting a wedding, a large family reunion, or a corporate gathering. Additional steps may be necessary to safeguard your system in areas prone to extreme weather conditions, such as heavy rainfall or freezing temperatures.

1) Septic Inspection

Before your event, a septic inspection is essential to ensure everything is in working order. MVP Rentals provides expert septic services in Idaho Falls, Rexburg, Rigby, Pocatello, and Twin Falls, helping you identify any underlying issues that could worsen under the stress of extra usage.

2) Pump the Septic Tank

Depending on the septic tank size and how recently it was pumped, it may be wise to schedule a pumping service. A full tank increases the risk of septic backup and overflow, especially during events where the system is pushed to its limits. Pumping the tank will reduce the chances of septic system damage or an untimely failure. MVP Rentals offers reliable septic service in Rexburg to prepare your system for large gatherings.

3) Evaluate the Drain Field

The drain field plays a critical part in absorbing and filtering wastewater. The soil absorption rate may be compromised if your property has experienced flooding risks or drought conditions. A well-maintained drain field prevents septic tank health and overflow during events. Inspecting and preparing your drain field ahead of time can help avoid serious problems when the system is in use.

Best Practices for Water Management During Events

Managing water usage during an event can improve your septic system’s performance. A well-organized water management plan ensures the system is not overwhelmed and operates efficiently.

1) Monitor Water Usage

Limit water-intensive activities like laundry or excessive dishwashing during the event to reduce stress on the septic system. In regions like Rexburg and Idaho Falls, where groundwater levels can fluctuate, it’s essential to be mindful of water usage during events to prevent septic system overload.

2) Encourage Responsible Guest Behavior

Place signs in bathrooms encouraging guests to reduce water usage. Simple steps, such as reducing the length of showers and limiting toilet flushes, can go a long way in preserving the health of your septic system. Providing guests access to portable restrooms from MVP Rentals can reduce strain on your existing system, especially for large-scale events.

3) Prevent Foreign Objects from Entering the System

Ensure that only human waste or toilet paper goes down the drain. Items like sanitary products, wipes, or excessive food waste can cause blockages and drain field issues. MVP Rentals can offer advice and tools to keep your system functioning smoothly during the event.

4) Account for Weather Conditions

Weather can heavily impact your septic system’s performance. Take precautions in areas prone to heavy rainfall or freezing temperatures. For example, in Twin Falls and Pocatello, it’s important to weatherproof your system to prevent frozen pipes or over-saturated drain fields. Similarly, septic service can be invaluable if preparing for winter conditions or potential storm surges.

Post-Event Management

Once the event has concluded, proper post-event management is crucial to restoring your septic system’s balance. Ignoring this step can lead to lingering issues that worsen over time.

1) Schedule a Post-Event Septic Inspection

After any large gathering, inspecting your system is beneficial to check for any early signs of septic system damage or overload. Scheduling service with MVP Rentals in Rigby, Rexburg, or Idaho Falls can help address potential problems before they become more significant.

2) Look for Signs of Overload

Slow drains, unpleasant odors, and septic backup are common signs of septic system overload. If any of these occur, it’s important to take immediate action. Septic system repairs can be costly if neglected, so addressing issues early is essential.

3) Repair Any Damaged Components

Repairs may be necessary if the system shows signs of stress or damage. In particular, events held during extreme weather or areas with fluctuating groundwater levels may require more intensive post-event inspections and maintenance. MVP Rentals offers septic system repairs that restore your system to optimal working condition.

Long-Term Strategies for Septic System Longevity

While preventing septic system overload during events is a key focus, it’s equally important to think about the long-term health of your system. Regular maintenance and smart usage habits will ensure your system lasts for years.

1) Routine Maintenance

Routine septic maintenance is essential for the longevity of your system. Regular pumping, inspections, and repairs keep your septic system functioning optimally. MVP Rentals offers a full range of septic services in Pocatello, Twin Falls, and surrounding areas, ensuring your system is always in peak condition.

2) Install Water-Saving Devices

Installing low-flow toilets, showerheads, and faucets can reduce the amount of water entering your septic system. This is particularly useful in Rexburg and Rigby, where drought conditions can impact soil absorption rates. Reducing the load on your system will extend its lifespan and minimize the risk of overload during high-demand periods.

3) Consider an Expanded Drain Field

Consider expanding your drain field if your property frequently hosts large events or the system needs help with septic tank overflow. This will increase the area for wastewater absorption, reducing the strain on the system and helping prevent septic backup.

4) Weather-Proof Your System

Properties in areas prone to wildfire damage or freezing temperatures, such as Pocatello or Twin Falls, should take extra precautions to weather-proof septic systems. This can include insulating pipes, installing risers, and maintaining proper drainage to ensure the system functions in all seasons.

How MVP Rentals Can Help You Maintain a Healthy Septic System

Hosting events can significantly strain your septic system, especially if it’s not properly maintained. By following best practices for preparation, water management, and post-event care, you can prevent septic system problems from overloading and avoid costly repairs. MVP Rentals offers comprehensive septic services across Idaho Falls, Rexburg, Rigby, Pocatello, and Twin Falls to ensure your system is ready for anything.

Recently I had an event scheduled at my house. I knew I needed a couple of porta potty's. Since this was for an event that required people to look their best, I wanted something more than a pit toilet. MVP was amazing. The initial contact along with delivery, set up, and pick up went amazing. The buildings were clean, and well stocked, AND they had running water, which the guests appreciated. I HIGHLY recommend MVP for any portable toilets you may need, whether it is in the field or at a wedding.

For full disclosure, I was offered a discount to leave a Google review regarding the June 4-11, 2024, rental, but of course this review is my sincere comments and observations of renting from MVP Rentals. This is the second time I’ve rented a porta potty from them. The first rental was in March 2021. This review is regarding the most recent rental in June 2024.This time I also got a handwash station since there’d be an outdoor event in summer, with food. You want people to be able to wash their hands after using the potty lol!The pros:1) Follow-up was excellent, as I had requested a quote for a potty in March or April I think, and they made notes to call me in May when a June family event got closer and they did!And when there was an issue (or seemed to be) their follow-up was excellent again!!!2) Their customer service was prompt, responsive and always friendly!!! When I left a message they replied or returned quickly and professionally. There were a couple glitches at the beginning when the potty was delivered (times 2 instead of 1), but not with the handwash station I’d requested, and their great employee went back and brought back the handwash station ASAP.Unfortunately I didn’t realize he’d dropped off the handwash station and I didn’t realize until after he’d left that there was other minor concerns, but some was user error on my part!I called and communicated my concerns that day in a voicemail (late afternoon) when I realized them, and they QUICKLY responded and were patient and kind about the user issue, and so pleasant to express a legit concern to!I’ve definitely dealt with companies that act like they think you’re the problem for bringing a concern or possible quality issue to their attention; I definitely got a very pleasant and prompt interaction and solutions from MVP in response to my voicemail, and that was such a relief. They promptly sent their guy back out early the next morning, who rectified my concerns with supplies or condition, and he also answered my questions on how the wash station worked, because I was a bit concerned about possibly running out of water or soap sometime during the week and wanted to know how to fill the water or empty the grey water (that’s an easy thing I wanted to be able to do myself if needed- no need for someone to drive over and do something I could do already in the short time it would take to call them), but that didn’t happen! The quantity of everything was enough to last the whole week.I had received a quote from one of their competitors, whose price was a few dollars lower without an incentive for leaving a Google review specifically, but I’d rented from MVP before and they already (or still) had the address on file and such, so I preferred sticking with the same company. The first time I rented from MVP, I requested only 1 potty in March 2021 when we had lots of family visiting a home with 1 bathroom! The price back then was a bit more than 1/4 of what the undiscounted price is now, but now I also rented a handwash station. So I estimate that it’s about double what it was before, but it’s been 3 years and a lot has changed in the whole economy in 3 years, especially the cost of gasoline, which in turn makes the costs of so many other services rise, besides supply and demand factoring into the equation. So anyway, it wasn’t a perfect experience, part of why I leave 4 stars, but their responsive and friendly attitudes made for a very good customer service experience, which means everything!and I definitely am happy with the whole experience, besides not being sure I’ll be able to afford such a service in the future since all such companies are that price or higher.Such is life I guess. First world problems, and this world is not my home; I’m just passing through! I’m glad MVP rentals was available this time though, and the porta potty was almost literally a lifesaver on a few occasions! Thanks again!
