Do’s and Don’ts of Septic System Care

Septic systems are crucial in managing household wastewater, especially for homes not connected to a municipal sewer system. Yet, despite their importance, they should be more noticed and maintained, leading to expensive repairs and environmental issues. Proper septic system care is necessary for your home’s health and the system’s longevity. If you’re a homeowner in areas like Rexburg, Idaho Falls, Pocatello, Twin Falls, or Rigby, understanding the do’s and don’ts of septic system care is essential.
This guide will explore key practices to ensure your septic system remains in the best condition and common mistakes to avoid. Whether you need septic service in Rexburg or septic tank maintenance in Idaho Falls, adhering to the guidelines below can save you from the inconvenience of a septic system failure.

The Importance of Proper Septic System Care

A well-maintained septic system can last decades, managing your home’s wastewater efficiently and safely. However, neglect can lead to serious problems such as system backups, unpleasant odors, and environmental hazards, including contamination of nearby water sources. Septic system care involves regular maintenance, responsible water usage, and proper waste disposal practices.
Homeowners in Pocatello, Rigby, and surrounding areas must remember that local conditions, including soil absorption rates and environmental regulations, play a critical part in septic system health. It is important to account for these factors to avoid early system failures and significant costs for repairs or replacements.

Common Septic System Issues

One of the most common problems with septic systems is the buildup of sludge and scum in the septic tank, which leads to blockages. Left unchecked, this can result in backups, leaks, or complete system failure. Heavy water usage, improper waste disposal, and lack of regular septic system inspections also contribute to system stress.
MVP Rentals provides expert septic service in areas like Twin Falls and Idaho Falls, ensuring your system stays functional year-round. Now, let’s dive into the essential do’s and don’ts for keeping your septic system in great shape.

Do’s of Septic System Care

1. Regular Maintenance

Among the most critical aspects of septic system care is frequent maintenance. It is advised to schedule septic tank pumping every three to five years, depending on the size of your household and system usage. Routine septic system maintenance ensures that solids in the tank don’t accumulate to the point where they clog the system or seep into the drainfield.
For residents of Rexburg and Pocatello, septic service providers like MVP Rentals can help you develop a regular maintenance plan and provide professional pumping and system inspections to extend your septic system’s lifespan.

2. Water Conservation Practices

Water conservation is crucial in maintaining your septic system’s health. Excessive water usage can overwhelm the system, causing premature wear and tear. Simple actions like installing low-flow fixtures, repairing leaks promptly, and spacing out laundry loads can reduce the strain on your system.
MVP Rentals advises homeowners in Rigby and Twin Falls to be mindful of their water consumption and offers solutions for managing household water usage effectively.

3. Proper Waste Disposal

Understanding what you can and cannot flush down your drains is another essential aspect of septic system care. Only biodegradable waste and septic-safe toilet paper should go into the system. Never flush items like wipes, feminine hygiene products, or paper towels, as they can clog pipes and damage your system.
Proper wastewater management practices, such as septic-safe products, contribute to your system’s long-term functionality. MVP Rentals can provide additional guidance on what to flush in a septic tank to avoid unnecessary blockages.

4. Landscaping for Septic Health

The area around your septic system, especially the drainfield, plays an important function. Landscaping for septic health involves ensuring that deep-rooted plants and trees are kept away from your septic system to prevent roots from damaging the tank or pipes. Instead, opt for shallow-rooted plants or grass to cover the area.
MVP Rentals can assist with drainfield inspections and help you maintain an environment conducive to your system’s health.

5. Educate Yourself and Others

As a homeowner, educating yourself about how your septic system works and the best practices for maintaining it is important. Sharing this knowledge with other family members ensures that everyone plays their part in keeping the system running smoothly. Simple steps, like knowing the signs of septic system failure or understanding local regulations, can prevent significant problems.

6. Use Septic-Safe Products

From cleaning products to detergents, always choose septic-safe products that are biodegradable and harsh chemical-free. These products break down more easily within the system and reduce the risk of damaging your septic tank or drainfield.

7. Perform Regular System Tests

Performing regular tests can help identify potential problems before they escalate. Testing the soil absorption rates around your drainfield and checking for leaks or backups are vital for catching issues early. Regular inspections also help monitor the tank’s levels and determine when to pump.

8. Use Covers for the Septic System

The septic system covers offer an extra layer of protection for your tank. They prevent debris, animals, and excess water from entering the system. Ensure your septic tank cover is properly installed and securely fastened.

9. Create a Drainfield Maintenance Plan

A well-functioning drainfield is critical to your system’s overall performance. To avoid overloading the drainfield, distribute water usage throughout the day and ensure that rainwater is diverted from the septic area. A comprehensive drainfield maintenance plan ensures your system can handle wastewater efficiently.

Don’ts of Septic System Care

1. Avoiding Hazardous Chemicals

Avoid using harsh chemicals in your house that can end up in the septic system. Cleaning products containing bleach, ammonia, or antibacterial agents can disrupt the bacteria balance necessary for breaking down waste in the tank. Choose septic-safe products instead to maintain a healthy system.

2. Not Overloading the System

Excessive water usage in a short period can overwhelm your septic system. Avoid doing various loads of laundry or running the dishwasher simultaneously, as this can flood the system and prevent it from processing waste effectively. Spacing out your water usage will help keep your septic system running smoothly.

3. Misusing the Drainfield

Your drainfield is essential for treating wastewater, so it’s important to use it wisely. Avoid parking vehicles, placing heavy objects, or constructing structures over the drainfield. These actions can compact the soil and interfere with its ability to absorb water. Rigby, Idaho Falls, and Twin Falls residents should always consider how to protect their drain fields from damage.

4. Ignoring Warning Signs

Consider these warning signs if you notice slow drains, bad odors, or standing water around your septic system. These are often the first indicators that something is wrong with your system. Addressing problems early can save you from more severe and expensive repairs later.

5. Don’t Ignore Local Regulations

Local regulations concerning septic system care vary by location. Whether you need septic system installation in Pocatello or septic system inspection in Rexburg, understanding and complying with local regulations is essential. Ignoring these rules could result in fines or system failure due to improper management practices.

6. Don’t Use Your Toilet as a Trash Can

Your septic system is not designed to manage non-biodegradable waste. Avoid flushing anything but human waste or toilet paper. Diapers, paper towels, and personal hygiene products can clog the system and cause expensive repairs.

7. Non-Biodegradable Materials

Flushing or draining non-biodegradable materials, such as grease, oil, or chemicals, can damage your septic system. These materials do not break down and can accumulate in your pipes, leading to blockages or damage to your tank and drainfield.

Troubleshooting Common Issues

Inevitably, septic systems will occasionally experience problems. Common issues include septic tank failure, pipe blockages, or drainfield issues. Regular inspections and septic tank pumping services are essential to addressing these problems before they escalate.
MVP Rentals offers expert troubleshooting for homeowners in Rexburg, Idaho Falls, and surrounding areas experiencing problems with their septic systems. You can reduce damage and avoid costly repairs by contacting a professional when you detect signs of septic tank failure.

Best Practices for Long-Term Care

To ensure your septic system’s longevity, always prioritize regular maintenance and be mindful of what you flush or drain into the system. Following best practices such as water conservation, proper waste disposal, and routine inspections can significantly extend your septic system’s lifespan.

Recently I had an event scheduled at my house. I knew I needed a couple of porta potty's. Since this was for an event that required people to look their best, I wanted something more than a pit toilet. MVP was amazing. The initial contact along with delivery, set up, and pick up went amazing. The buildings were clean, and well stocked, AND they had running water, which the guests appreciated. I HIGHLY recommend MVP for any portable toilets you may need, whether it is in the field or at a wedding.

For full disclosure, I was offered a discount to leave a Google review regarding the June 4-11, 2024, rental, but of course this review is my sincere comments and observations of renting from MVP Rentals. This is the second time I’ve rented a porta potty from them. The first rental was in March 2021. This review is regarding the most recent rental in June 2024.This time I also got a handwash station since there’d be an outdoor event in summer, with food. You want people to be able to wash their hands after using the potty lol!The pros:1) Follow-up was excellent, as I had requested a quote for a potty in March or April I think, and they made notes to call me in May when a June family event got closer and they did!And when there was an issue (or seemed to be) their follow-up was excellent again!!!2) Their customer service was prompt, responsive and always friendly!!! When I left a message they replied or returned quickly and professionally. There were a couple glitches at the beginning when the potty was delivered (times 2 instead of 1), but not with the handwash station I’d requested, and their great employee went back and brought back the handwash station ASAP.Unfortunately I didn’t realize he’d dropped off the handwash station and I didn’t realize until after he’d left that there was other minor concerns, but some was user error on my part!I called and communicated my concerns that day in a voicemail (late afternoon) when I realized them, and they QUICKLY responded and were patient and kind about the user issue, and so pleasant to express a legit concern to!I’ve definitely dealt with companies that act like they think you’re the problem for bringing a concern or possible quality issue to their attention; I definitely got a very pleasant and prompt interaction and solutions from MVP in response to my voicemail, and that was such a relief. They promptly sent their guy back out early the next morning, who rectified my concerns with supplies or condition, and he also answered my questions on how the wash station worked, because I was a bit concerned about possibly running out of water or soap sometime during the week and wanted to know how to fill the water or empty the grey water (that’s an easy thing I wanted to be able to do myself if needed- no need for someone to drive over and do something I could do already in the short time it would take to call them), but that didn’t happen! The quantity of everything was enough to last the whole week.I had received a quote from one of their competitors, whose price was a few dollars lower without an incentive for leaving a Google review specifically, but I’d rented from MVP before and they already (or still) had the address on file and such, so I preferred sticking with the same company. The first time I rented from MVP, I requested only 1 potty in March 2021 when we had lots of family visiting a home with 1 bathroom! The price back then was a bit more than 1/4 of what the undiscounted price is now, but now I also rented a handwash station. So I estimate that it’s about double what it was before, but it’s been 3 years and a lot has changed in the whole economy in 3 years, especially the cost of gasoline, which in turn makes the costs of so many other services rise, besides supply and demand factoring into the equation. So anyway, it wasn’t a perfect experience, part of why I leave 4 stars, but their responsive and friendly attitudes made for a very good customer service experience, which means everything!and I definitely am happy with the whole experience, besides not being sure I’ll be able to afford such a service in the future since all such companies are that price or higher.Such is life I guess. First world problems, and this world is not my home; I’m just passing through! I’m glad MVP rentals was available this time though, and the porta potty was almost literally a lifesaver on a few occasions! Thanks again!
