Blocked Drain Pipes: Common Causes, Fixes, And Why Porta Potty Rental Helps

Blocked Drain Pipes: Common Causes, Fixes, And Why Porta Potty Rental Helps

If you own a home or run a job site in Eastern Idaho, you know the ground here does not sit still. The freeze-thaw cycle around Rigby, Idaho Falls, and Pocatello hits hard every season, stressing buried pipes and pushing tree roots into places they have no business being. Blocked drain pipes are not uncommon emergencies out here. It is simply a matter of time for most of the homeowners and contractors.

The factual issue under the blocked drain pipe is that it will slow down the process and cause backups. It shuts them down entirely. No working drains means no functioning toilets.

This guide covers what causes blocked drain pipes, how to fix them, and why porta potty rental from MVP Rentals keeps your site operational while repairs are underway.

What Are Blocked Drain Pipes?

A blocked drain pipe is any pipe in your plumbing or sewer system that prevents water and waste from flowing freely. The obstruction could be right below your bathroom drain or deep in the main sewer line running out to your septic tank.

Clogged drain pipes are not always obvious early on. A slow-draining sink or a toilet that takes a few extra seconds to clear can seem minor, but it’s an early warning. By the time you see wastewater backup or smell sewage in the house, the problem has usually been developing for weeks.

Common Causes of Blocked Drain Pipes

1. Grease and Food Buildup

Cooking oil and grease go down the drain warm and liquid, but they do not stay that way. They cool on pipe walls and slowly trap food scraps and debris. Over months, grease buildup in pipes narrows the line until nothing moves. For restaurants and food businesses across Eastern Idaho, this moves faster than it does at home, which is exactly why routine grease trap service is part of keeping a commercial kitchen running.

2. Hair, Soap Scum, and Non-Flushable Items

Bathroom drain clogs almost always come down to the same combination: hair wrapped around the interior of the drain, with soap residue binding it in place. Toilet drain blockages usually stem from wet wipes, paper towels, or cotton products that do not dissolve in water. They snag, stack, and build until the drain stops working entirely.

3. Tree Root Intrusion

In older neighborhoods around Idaho Falls, Blackfoot, and Pocatello, tree roots in drain pipes are a recurring problem. Roots grow toward moisture, and your sewer line stays consistently wet. Once a root finds a hairline crack in the pipe wall, it grows along the crack until it completely blocks the sewer line. This type of drain pipe blockage cannot be cleared with a snake or plunger. It requires a professional drain camera inspection before any repair work starts.

4. Pipe Corrosion and Collapse

Eastern Idaho winters accelerate wear on older buried pipes. Clay and cast-iron pipes are especially prone to corrosion and collapse. A collapsed section cannot carry waste past the damage point, and emergency drain pipe repair becomes the only option.

Signs You Have a Blocked Drain Pipe

Catching a blockage early makes repairs faster and far less disruptive. Watch for these warning signs:

  • The first sign that something is accumulating in the line is the slow draining of water in your sink, shower, or tub.
  • This gurgling following the emptying signal is due to a strapped AI, rather than a partial blockage that limits downstream flow.
  • The odor of sewage in the house is an indicator of the wastewater accumulation, forcing the gases up through your pipes.
  • Several fixtures backing up simultaneously almost always indicate a problem in the main sewer line, not an isolated drain.

How to Fix Blocked Drain Pipes

The right fix depends on where the blockage is and what caused it.

Blockage Type DIY Option Professional Solution
Hair and Soap in the Bathroom Drain Plunger or hand drain snake Drain cleaning services
Grease Buildup in the Kitchen Line Hot water flush Hydro jetting service
Tree Root Intrusion Not applicable Drain camera inspection and root removal
Main Sewer Line Clog Not applicable Sewer line blockage repair
Collapsed Or Corroded Pipe Not applicable Emergency drain pipe repair
Septic System Blockage Not applicable Septic pumping and inspection

Surface-level bathroom drain clogs can often be cleared at home. Everything else, including tree roots, sewer line blockages, and collapsed pipe sections, needs professional plumbing repair services. A drain camera inspection tells the plumber exactly what is happening before any digging starts. From there, a hydro jetting service blasts through grease and debris, or emergency plumbing services handle the structural damage directly.

Why Porta Potty Rental Helps During Drain Repairs

  • Here is the part most people only figure out after they are already stuck: when your main drain line is down, your toilets are down too. Using them risks a wastewater backup that makes everything worse.
  • Emergency drain pipe repair takes time. Tree root removal, sewer line blockage repair, and collapsed pipe work can stretch over a full day or more. During that window, your household, employees, or construction crew still need functional restrooms.
  • MVP Rentals, based in Rigby, serves all of Eastern Idaho, Southern Idaho, and Western Wyoming, delivering portable toilets and executive restroom trailers directly to your location. Whether that is a residence in Jefferson County, a commercial site in Bonneville County, or a construction project in Teton County, they get there quickly.
  • For construction site sanitation, MVP Rentals is already the trusted name across the region. Temporary restroom rentals are equally important during residential repairs, commercial plumbing jobs, and any situation where the building’s own facilities are offline.

When to Consider Porta Potty Rental

A practical rule: if repairs will take more than a couple of hours and water access is shut off, get a temporary unit on site before work begins. Common situations that make it necessary include emergency drain pipe repair on the main sewer line, a septic system blockage that takes home plumbing offline, commercial plumbing repairs where customers cannot use the building, and construction site sanitation on projects without permanent restroom access.

In rural parts of Jefferson, Fremont, and Bingham counties, where homes run on septic systems instead of city sewer, a septic system blockage can leave a property without plumbing for days. Portable toilet rental makes the repair process manageable for everyone involved.

How to Prevent Future Drain Pipe Blockages

Most drain pipe blockages are preventable. In the kitchen, never pour cooking grease down the drain, and use a strainer to collect food particles. Food businesses should keep up with regular grease trap service to prevent buildup from causing a drain emergency.

In the bathroom, a basic hair catcher prevents the most common type of clog in the drain. Flush only toilet paper, regardless of what any packaging claims.

For your sewer line or septic system, a professional drain inspection every few years is worth scheduling, especially on older properties with large trees near the line. Catching root intrusion early costs far less than a full sewer line blockage repair later.

If Your Drains Are Down: MVP Rentals Has You Covered.

Blocked drain pipes are a fact of life in Eastern Idaho, where the ground freezes hard, pipes age, and repairs take time. During that time, you still need on-site sanitation.

MVP Rentals has served Eastern Idaho families, businesses, and construction crews since 2017. As a family-owned company out of Rigby, they deliver on time, keep their units clean, and make porta-potty rental straightforward from first call to final pickup.

Recently I had an event scheduled at my house. I knew I needed a couple of porta potty's. Since this was for an event that required people to look their best, I wanted something more than a pit toilet. MVP was amazing. The initial contact along with delivery, set up, and pick up went amazing. The buildings were clean, and well stocked, AND they had running water, which the guests appreciated. I HIGHLY recommend MVP for any portable toilets you may need, whether it is in the field or at a wedding.

For full disclosure, I was offered a discount to leave a Google review regarding the June 4-11, 2024, rental, but of course this review is my sincere comments and observations of renting from MVP Rentals. This is the second time I’ve rented a porta potty from them. The first rental was in March 2021. This review is regarding the most recent rental in June 2024.This time I also got a handwash station since there’d be an outdoor event in summer, with food. You want people to be able to wash their hands after using the potty lol!The pros:1) Follow-up was excellent, as I had requested a quote for a potty in March or April I think, and they made notes to call me in May when a June family event got closer and they did!And when there was an issue (or seemed to be) their follow-up was excellent again!!!2) Their customer service was prompt, responsive and always friendly!!! When I left a message they replied or returned quickly and professionally. There were a couple glitches at the beginning when the potty was delivered (times 2 instead of 1), but not with the handwash station I’d requested, and their great employee went back and brought back the handwash station ASAP.Unfortunately I didn’t realize he’d dropped off the handwash station and I didn’t realize until after he’d left that there was other minor concerns, but some was user error on my part!I called and communicated my concerns that day in a voicemail (late afternoon) when I realized them, and they QUICKLY responded and were patient and kind about the user issue, and so pleasant to express a legit concern to!I’ve definitely dealt with companies that act like they think you’re the problem for bringing a concern or possible quality issue to their attention; I definitely got a very pleasant and prompt interaction and solutions from MVP in response to my voicemail, and that was such a relief. They promptly sent their guy back out early the next morning, who rectified my concerns with supplies or condition, and he also answered my questions on how the wash station worked, because I was a bit concerned about possibly running out of water or soap sometime during the week and wanted to know how to fill the water or empty the grey water (that’s an easy thing I wanted to be able to do myself if needed- no need for someone to drive over and do something I could do already in the short time it would take to call them), but that didn’t happen! The quantity of everything was enough to last the whole week.I had received a quote from one of their competitors, whose price was a few dollars lower without an incentive for leaving a Google review specifically, but I’d rented from MVP before and they already (or still) had the address on file and such, so I preferred sticking with the same company. The first time I rented from MVP, I requested only 1 potty in March 2021 when we had lots of family visiting a home with 1 bathroom! The price back then was a bit more than 1/4 of what the undiscounted price is now, but now I also rented a handwash station. So I estimate that it’s about double what it was before, but it’s been 3 years and a lot has changed in the whole economy in 3 years, especially the cost of gasoline, which in turn makes the costs of so many other services rise, besides supply and demand factoring into the equation. So anyway, it wasn’t a perfect experience, part of why I leave 4 stars, but their responsive and friendly attitudes made for a very good customer service experience, which means everything!and I definitely am happy with the whole experience, besides not being sure I’ll be able to afford such a service in the future since all such companies are that price or higher.Such is life I guess. First world problems, and this world is not my home; I’m just passing through! I’m glad MVP rentals was available this time though, and the porta potty was almost literally a lifesaver on a few occasions! Thanks again!
