Septic Tank Size Calculator: Find the Right Fit for Your Idaho Home

Septic Tank Size Calculator Find the Right Fit for Your Home

Septic systems are like parachutes. You only notice them when they fail. In regular life, an undersized tank is inconvenient. In an emergency? It’s catastrophic.

That’s where MVP Rentals steps in.

Whether you’re preparing for a natural disaster, setting up an emergency shelter, or just trying to keep your household systems efficient and compliant, understanding the best septic tank size for your home is non-negotiable. And in Idaho, where conditions shift from dry spells to sudden floods, you need a septic service solution built for resilience, with dependable coverage across Pocatello, Rexburg, Idaho Falls, Montpelier, Twin Falls, Rigby, and surrounding areas.

In this septic tank sizing guide, we’ll take a closer look at residential septic tank size chart guidelines and what Idaho homeowners need to know before making that call.

Why Septic Tank Size Isn’t Just a Number?

According to the leading septic system maintenance service experts near me in Pocatello, the size of your septic tank directly impacts its ability to manage wastewater without backing up, overflowing, or causing contamination. And during emergencies, when resources are stretched thin, having a properly sized tank could make all the difference.

1. When Emergency Shelters Are Set Up

Whether it’s a wildfire relief site or a temporary operations base, sanitation can’t be left to chance. Your tank size needs to match your home’s occupancy and wastewater load, or you’ll just be flushing problems into the future.

2. When Nature Doesn’t Cooperate

Floods, fires, earthquakes, Idaho has seen them all. In these moments, infrastructure breaks down. A correctly sized septic tank ensures your household or command center stays sanitary, even if the grid doesn’t.

3. When the Grid Goes Down

Power outage? No water? If your tank is too small, it’ll overflow fast. No thanks. Leading septic system service specialists in Rexburg reveal that larger, correctly sized systems can give you that critical buffer.

What Size Septic Tank Do You Need?

Septic tank sizing is based primarily on two things:

  1. The number of bedrooms in your house (a proxy for occupancy).
  2. The average daily household water usage, including all those hidden contributors, such as dishwashers and garbage disposals.

Let’s break it down by residential septic system design and home size.

1. Bedroom Home

Recommended Tank Size

750–900 gallons

Use case Single occupants or couples with limited guests
Extra consideration If you frequently use water-intensive appliances, consider sizing up.

Pro tip: Don’t assume small = simple. Even a 1-bedroom house with a luxury spa tub and high-use laundry will stress a tiny tank.

2. Bedroom Home

Recommended Tank Size

900–1,000 gallons

Use case Small families or two adults with kids
Water usage impact Garbage disposals and washing machines can increase daily output by 25–30 gallons/day.

3. Bedroom Home

Recommended Tank Size

1,000–1,250 gallons

Use case Typical American family with moderate guest frequency
Considerations Evaluate household water usage patterns, especially showers and dishwashing cycles.

4. Bedroom Home (and up)

Recommended Tank Size 1,250–1,500 gallons
Use case Larger households, multigenerational families, or homes with frequent guests
Planning tip Think ahead—future renovations or additions will require more capacity.

Planning tip: Think ahead: future renovations or additions will require more capacity.

Need Help Crunching the Numbers? Try a Septic Tank Size Calculator

Not all homes are created equal, even if they have the same number of bedrooms. A good septic tank sizing guide considers much more than floor plans. Here’s what should be factored in:

Sizing Factors to Consider:

  • The number of people in the Home: More people = more wastewater.
  • Number of bathrooms: Each bathroom adds flow.
  • Appliance usage: Appliances such as dishwashers, washing machines, and garbage disposals contribute significantly to daily water usage—highlighting the impact of water-using appliances on septic tank capacity and performance.
  • Guests and gatherings: Frequent visitors? You need a buffer.
  • Your habits: Long showers, extra rinse cycles, or multiple loads of laundry per day all matter.

What is the best way to determine your size? Use a professional calculator, or better yet, speak with Idaho-based septic maintenance services experts like MVP Rentals, who understand both residential septic system design and local compliance in Twin Falls, Idaho Falls, Rigby, Montpelier, ID, and neighboring locations.

FAQs: Straight Talk About Septic Sizing

Q1: Can I install a larger tank than what’s recommended?

Yes, and sometimes it’s wise, especially if your family is growing or you plan to entertain frequently. Please note that installation space and regulations still apply.

Q2: What if I plan to expand my Home in the future?

Then go larger now. It’s more cost-effective to size for the future than to upgrade later.

Q3: How often should I pump my septic tank?

Typically every 3–5 years. However, the frequency depends on factors such as tank size, family size, septic capacity, and water usage. MVP Rentals offers routine septic service plans to keep your system flowing smoothly in Pocatello, Rexburg, and nearby locations.

Recently I had an event scheduled at my house. I knew I needed a couple of porta potty's. Since this was for an event that required people to look their best, I wanted something more than a pit toilet. MVP was amazing. The initial contact along with delivery, set up, and pick up went amazing. The buildings were clean, and well stocked, AND they had running water, which the guests appreciated. I HIGHLY recommend MVP for any portable toilets you may need, whether it is in the field or at a wedding.

For full disclosure, I was offered a discount to leave a Google review regarding the June 4-11, 2024, rental, but of course this review is my sincere comments and observations of renting from MVP Rentals. This is the second time I’ve rented a porta potty from them. The first rental was in March 2021. This review is regarding the most recent rental in June 2024.This time I also got a handwash station since there’d be an outdoor event in summer, with food. You want people to be able to wash their hands after using the potty lol!The pros:1) Follow-up was excellent, as I had requested a quote for a potty in March or April I think, and they made notes to call me in May when a June family event got closer and they did!And when there was an issue (or seemed to be) their follow-up was excellent again!!!2) Their customer service was prompt, responsive and always friendly!!! When I left a message they replied or returned quickly and professionally. There were a couple glitches at the beginning when the potty was delivered (times 2 instead of 1), but not with the handwash station I’d requested, and their great employee went back and brought back the handwash station ASAP.Unfortunately I didn’t realize he’d dropped off the handwash station and I didn’t realize until after he’d left that there was other minor concerns, but some was user error on my part!I called and communicated my concerns that day in a voicemail (late afternoon) when I realized them, and they QUICKLY responded and were patient and kind about the user issue, and so pleasant to express a legit concern to!I’ve definitely dealt with companies that act like they think you’re the problem for bringing a concern or possible quality issue to their attention; I definitely got a very pleasant and prompt interaction and solutions from MVP in response to my voicemail, and that was such a relief. They promptly sent their guy back out early the next morning, who rectified my concerns with supplies or condition, and he also answered my questions on how the wash station worked, because I was a bit concerned about possibly running out of water or soap sometime during the week and wanted to know how to fill the water or empty the grey water (that’s an easy thing I wanted to be able to do myself if needed- no need for someone to drive over and do something I could do already in the short time it would take to call them), but that didn’t happen! The quantity of everything was enough to last the whole week.I had received a quote from one of their competitors, whose price was a few dollars lower without an incentive for leaving a Google review specifically, but I’d rented from MVP before and they already (or still) had the address on file and such, so I preferred sticking with the same company. The first time I rented from MVP, I requested only 1 potty in March 2021 when we had lots of family visiting a home with 1 bathroom! The price back then was a bit more than 1/4 of what the undiscounted price is now, but now I also rented a handwash station. So I estimate that it’s about double what it was before, but it’s been 3 years and a lot has changed in the whole economy in 3 years, especially the cost of gasoline, which in turn makes the costs of so many other services rise, besides supply and demand factoring into the equation. So anyway, it wasn’t a perfect experience, part of why I leave 4 stars, but their responsive and friendly attitudes made for a very good customer service experience, which means everything!and I definitely am happy with the whole experience, besides not being sure I’ll be able to afford such a service in the future since all such companies are that price or higher.Such is life I guess. First world problems, and this world is not my home; I’m just passing through! I’m glad MVP rentals was available this time though, and the porta potty was almost literally a lifesaver on a few occasions! Thanks again!

MVP has very friendly staff. Their customer service is a 5 star. We usually get to work with this company every summer. I highly recommend. We have never been disappointed. We have needed the portable toilets moved in the past to sightly different areas then what they were placed. They have always been more than happy to make sure that we were accommodated and they were placed where we needed them. They keep the units super clean and stocked. They always go above and beyond. Love this company. Thank you all so much for all you do!!!!
