Locate Your Septic System Fast: Tips Every Homeowner Should Know

Owning a home with a septic system comes with responsibilities, including knowing where your septic tank and system components are located. Whether you’re a new homeowner or have lived on your property for years, understanding your septic system’s location is critical for effective maintenance and avoiding costly repairs. Homeowners in Rexburg, Idaho Falls, Twin Falls, and surrounding areas should be especially aware of this, as rural homes often depend on septic systems for waste management. This blog provides essential tips to locate your septic system fast and ensure you can maintain it effectively.

Why You Need to Know the Location of Your Septic System

Knowing exactly where your septic system is can be more than a useful piece of trivia: it’s crucial to its longevity and to your property. An inefficiently maintained septic system can eventually back up, wreaking havoc with smells, groundwater contamination, and even costly damage to your yard or home. Regular septic system inspections, pumping, and repairs must also occur to keep the system running well.
Knowing where septic system components are located will also make it easier to have your septic system maintenance done professionally. If you live in Rexburg, Pocatello, Rigby, and surrounding areas or any other location serviced by MVP Rentals, we can conduct a much more efficient inspection of your septic system, saving you time and money.

Signs You May Already Know the Location of Your Septic System

Before you use professional techniques to locate your septic system quickly, do you already know where it might be on the property? There are a number of clues that might indicate where it is.

1. Septic system map:

Some houses include a map or diagram of the septic system. If you’re fortunate enough to access this document, it will probably give you a pretty good idea of where the septic tank and the leach field will likely be.

2. Septic tank access covers:

Large square or round covers in your yard indicate where a septic tank is located. Top septic service experts in Rexburg, who mostly deal with septic system tools, reveal that these covers often sit closer to the house but not too close to driveways, water, or other sources.

3. Uneven grass growth or lush patches:

A distinct green, thick mass in your yard, especially during dry periods, may imply the location of your septic tank or leach field. This is because wastewater provides excess moisture to these areas.

4. Mature vegetation:

If older trees or bushes shade areas faster than plants growing on your property, their roots will feed off the moisture in your septic system. According to the leading septic system service maintenance contractors in Twin Falls, this is not desirable, as roots can damage your septic system, but it will help locate where your system is buried.

Techniques for Locating Your Septic System

If the above clues haven’t led you to the location of your septic system, there are more precise methods to find your septic tank. Here are the best techniques:

1. Septic tank probe:

Perform a septic tank probe using a long rod or septic tank probe, gently pushing the rod into the ground to locate solid obstructions, likely your septic tank. Don’t damage the tank. According to the top septic system maintenance service experts in Pocatello, this is one of the easiest, most commonly used methods by homeowners and septic system professionals.

2. Locate drain field using inspection pipes:

Most septic systems are built with inspection pipes. These pipes make it easy to check fluid levels in the drain field. They usually have small caps that protrude from the ground. In most cases, they are located some distance away from the tank near the leach field.

3. Septic tank location tools:

Leading septic system maintenance service contractors in Rigby who mostly deal with septic system markers and other location tools reveal that advanced equipment, including electronic tank locators, can locate underground tanks by detecting signals from them. Septic system professionals more often use these, but they are likely too costly for occasional use at home.

4. Check county records:

In some cases, local health departments may have records of septic system maintenance and installations, especially in rural areas like Rexburg and Idaho Falls. Such records will provide you with much detail on the system layout of your property.

5. Hiring a professional septic system locator:

If you’re struggling to locate your septic system quickly, hiring professionals like MVP Rentals can save you time and potentially damage your property. Our professionals use a combination of expertise, advanced tools, and system records to locate your septic system precisely.

Hiring a Professional

There are times when the self-attempt approach just doesn’t cut it. If your septic tank is deeply buried or the topography of your property is unclear, it’s wise to call a septic system professional. Choosing the pros will prevent damaging your system or property. MVP Rentals is one of the most trusted names in septic services in Rexburg, Pocatello, and across all of Idaho, specializing in inspecting, maintaining, and pumping septic systems. Next Steps After Locating Your Septic System

After you’ve located your septic system, you should take proactive steps to care for it. Here are some steps to ensure your septic system works well for years.

1. Schedule regular pumping

To avoid backup and system failure, you must pump regularly every three to five years, depending on household size and tank size. In places like Rigby and Pocatello, where pumping may be complex, plan ahead and collaborate with a credible septic service professional like MVP Rentals to secure a regular pumping schedule.

2. Mark the location clearly

Once you locate your septic tank, mark the location with a permanent solution, such as placing a garden stone or installing a small, hidden marker. This will help save you loads of time and help septic service professionals easily locate your tank for inspection and/or maintenance.

3. Create a maintenance plan

Creating a septic system maintenance plan can prevent costly repairs down the line. Work with your septic service Rexburg or septic service Idaho Falls provider to ensure you’re meeting all necessary requirements for pumping, inspections, and repairs.

4. Test the soil around the tank

You should test the soil surrounding the septic tank and the leach field for initial signs of contamination. According to the leading septic system maintenance service contractors in Idaho Falls who mostly deal with septic tank locators and markers, contaminated soil is a sign that your septic system is not working efficiently, which can result from either a clogged drain field or a full septic tank.

5. Ensure proper drainage

Your septic system relies on proper drainage to function properly. To prevent soil compaction, which can cause system failure, heavy foot traffic and excess water over the leach field should be excluded.

6. Identify surrounding hazards

Be aware of trees, shrubs, and buildings that could be close to your septic system. Top septic system maintenance service professionals in Rigby who mostly deal with septic tank location tools reveal that tree roots or settling foundations can damage the tank or leach lines. Don’t plant large vegetation near your septic system.

7. Verify tank capacity

Knowing the size of your septic tank is important in deciding on pumping frequencies. Depending on the size of the property, residents in areas like Pocatello or Twin Falls may have larger or smaller tanks, and our expert team of MVP Rentals can help you confirm the tank capacity.

Recently I had an event scheduled at my house. I knew I needed a couple of porta potty's. Since this was for an event that required people to look their best, I wanted something more than a pit toilet. MVP was amazing. The initial contact along with delivery, set up, and pick up went amazing. The buildings were clean, and well stocked, AND they had running water, which the guests appreciated. I HIGHLY recommend MVP for any portable toilets you may need, whether it is in the field or at a wedding.

For full disclosure, I was offered a discount to leave a Google review regarding the June 4-11, 2024, rental, but of course this review is my sincere comments and observations of renting from MVP Rentals. This is the second time I’ve rented a porta potty from them. The first rental was in March 2021. This review is regarding the most recent rental in June 2024.This time I also got a handwash station since there’d be an outdoor event in summer, with food. You want people to be able to wash their hands after using the potty lol!The pros:1) Follow-up was excellent, as I had requested a quote for a potty in March or April I think, and they made notes to call me in May when a June family event got closer and they did!And when there was an issue (or seemed to be) their follow-up was excellent again!!!2) Their customer service was prompt, responsive and always friendly!!! When I left a message they replied or returned quickly and professionally. There were a couple glitches at the beginning when the potty was delivered (times 2 instead of 1), but not with the handwash station I’d requested, and their great employee went back and brought back the handwash station ASAP.Unfortunately I didn’t realize he’d dropped off the handwash station and I didn’t realize until after he’d left that there was other minor concerns, but some was user error on my part!I called and communicated my concerns that day in a voicemail (late afternoon) when I realized them, and they QUICKLY responded and were patient and kind about the user issue, and so pleasant to express a legit concern to!I’ve definitely dealt with companies that act like they think you’re the problem for bringing a concern or possible quality issue to their attention; I definitely got a very pleasant and prompt interaction and solutions from MVP in response to my voicemail, and that was such a relief. They promptly sent their guy back out early the next morning, who rectified my concerns with supplies or condition, and he also answered my questions on how the wash station worked, because I was a bit concerned about possibly running out of water or soap sometime during the week and wanted to know how to fill the water or empty the grey water (that’s an easy thing I wanted to be able to do myself if needed- no need for someone to drive over and do something I could do already in the short time it would take to call them), but that didn’t happen! The quantity of everything was enough to last the whole week.I had received a quote from one of their competitors, whose price was a few dollars lower without an incentive for leaving a Google review specifically, but I’d rented from MVP before and they already (or still) had the address on file and such, so I preferred sticking with the same company. The first time I rented from MVP, I requested only 1 potty in March 2021 when we had lots of family visiting a home with 1 bathroom! The price back then was a bit more than 1/4 of what the undiscounted price is now, but now I also rented a handwash station. So I estimate that it’s about double what it was before, but it’s been 3 years and a lot has changed in the whole economy in 3 years, especially the cost of gasoline, which in turn makes the costs of so many other services rise, besides supply and demand factoring into the equation. So anyway, it wasn’t a perfect experience, part of why I leave 4 stars, but their responsive and friendly attitudes made for a very good customer service experience, which means everything!and I definitely am happy with the whole experience, besides not being sure I’ll be able to afford such a service in the future since all such companies are that price or higher.Such is life I guess. First world problems, and this world is not my home; I’m just passing through! I’m glad MVP rentals was available this time though, and the porta potty was almost literally a lifesaver on a few occasions! Thanks again!

MVP has very friendly staff. Their customer service is a 5 star. We usually get to work with this company every summer. I highly recommend. We have never been disappointed. We have needed the portable toilets moved in the past to sightly different areas then what they were placed. They have always been more than happy to make sure that we were accommodated and they were placed where we needed them. They keep the units super clean and stocked. They always go above and beyond. Love this company. Thank you all so much for all you do!!!!
